"I'm going through cancer but I don't feel like I have cancer. The way I look at it, there is so much love that the community has pushed it out."
Olivia Carey, first AAB recipient
Arms Around Bainbridge began in 2007 with seven friends, a thirty mile swim around Bainbridge Island and one goal: To provide financial and emotional support to a friend as she battled ovarian cancer.
It soon became apparent that Olivia Carey's challenges were not unique. Our community shares an ongoing problem of island residents in financial crisis due to life-threatening illness. Today, that initial fundraising swim by a few hearty souls has grown to include support from hundreds of individuals, local businesses and the philanthropic community. While the annual around-the-island swim anchors much of our fundraising, we now hold events throughout the year in order to generate a revenue stream sufficient to support our roster of recipients.
To date we have disbursed over $365,000 to our neighbors who are caught in financial crisis as a result of serious illness. We raise funds through a variety of events, including a round-the-island relay that has featured bicyclists, rowers, walkers and swimmers. Our goal is to build an endowment with which we can fund our recipient’s monthly needs , thereby ensuring long-term support for island residents in health and financial crisis.
Arms Around Bainbridge is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization with very few expenses. Currently 90% of donations directly support beneficiaries.
